Matthew Jones

About Me

Hi there! My name is Matt and I am a Research Fellow in the Dynamics Research Group, University of Sheffield. I am broadly interested in the fusion of data and physics, to build interpretable, explainable and physics-informed models to understand and monitor critical engineering infrastructure. I largely work in the areas of aerospace and transport, with projects ranging from monitoring landing gears to aero-engines.

• [March 2026] Work on improving long-term health monitoring through using a range of methods for embedding domain knowledge into machine learning was published in MSSP.
• [Feb 2026] Our paper on embedding physical knowledge into machine learning models that changes over time was published in MSSP.
• [Dec 2025] Awarded a project to develop multi-modal digital twin technologies by DTNetPlus, with a focus on improved models for helicopter blades.
• [Nov 2025] Invited speaker at the bi-yearly meeting for the European project “Digital Bridge”, Munich, Germany.
• [Sept 2025] A new PhD student joins my team, supervised by myself, Prof. Roger Lewis and Prof. David Fletcher, with a focus on predictive maintenance.
• [Dec 2024] Hosted a one day event on physics-informed machine learning as part of the 6th Dynamics Research Group workshop.
• [May 2024] Began a 3 month research visit with Dr. Mauricio Alvarez at University of Manchester looking at the interpretability of deep Gaussian processes.
